Lesson Plan: Mixed Media Silhouette

Goal: to put a creative twist on the classic silhouette using mixed media

Materials:

  • Drawing paper

  • Pencil

  • Flashlight

  • Old newspapers/magazines

  • Glue

  • Paint

  • Paint brushes

  • Water

  • Scissors

How to prep:

I found that I couldn’t really prep for this project other than gathering my materials and understanding how to do the project.

Directions for students:

Have the student stand against a wall so that you can see their side profile. Place the sheet of drawing paper directly behind their head and turn the lights off. Have the student close their eyes and shine the flashlight at the student so that you can trace their head. Cut out the silhouette of the student and have them decorate it using collage or paint, or a mix of both.

What it looks like:

I do not have any pictures of the process, but here’s a look at the final product

Helpful hints:

When tracing the student’s side profile, try to include the neck so that it looks like a silhouette. If the student allows, hold their head with your hands to make sure they don’t move while you’re tracing.
