Lesson Plan: Tie Dye T-shirts

Goal: Tie shirts in a chosen pattern and dye them to make a multicolor design.

Materials:

  • 3 colors of tie dye

  • White t-shirt

  • Elastic bands

  • Tin pans

  • Water

  • Salt

  • News paper

  • Gallon Freezer bags

How to Prep:

Take the price tags and stickers off the shirts. Then cover the surface you are working on with newspaper and then on top set up the dye in the tin pans. Follow the directions on the back of the bottle to set up the dye.

Directions for Students:

Give each student a shirt and have them fold it to create the spiral design. Help them use rubber bands to secure it and then explain how to dip the shirt in the dye to make the pattern. Once they have enough dye on the shirt put it in a plastic bag and let it dry for 24 hours. Then rinse with water and wash by itself.

What it looks like:

Helpful Hints:

Make sure there’s enough dye on the shirt or there will be too much white and the pattern won’t look as nice. Also wear plastic gloves to protect skin and make sure there’s enough coverage on the surface that you’re working on to ensure dye doesn’t stain anything.
